Glad to see folks getting out there. I just signed up for my first of the season about 20 minutes ago.

Ive never auto crossed. How cool are guys about it? I mean I feel like I'd hit cones all day. Seems somewhat hard to figure out which cone to turn at and what not. But I want to do it. Just don't want to be the black sheep my first time.

You won't be at all. Come join the Golden Gate chapter of BMWCCA (non-BMW drivers are more than welcome and usually we have tons of them).

As the saying goes, if you're not slaying cones, you're not pushing yourself hard enough/having enough fun.

At least locally Auto-X isn't competitive at all (ok, maybe the very top folks who are super good have some internal rivalries, but apart form that everyone is out there to have a good time to improve driving skill and push their cars as much as they can).

Dude hell yeah. No looking down upon my FWD Toyota? Haha I'm so down. Where's it usually held? I'm in Sonoma county.

I'll use this opportunity to pimp my AutoX 101 guide for those newbies out there who want to try it.

http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/autocross-101-…

It's very accessible for new people usually.

hmm that's a bit of a drive for you then - they are usually at Candlestick or waayy down at Marina Municipal Airport near Monterey.

Nah, as long as you're a car fan and are there to learn/have fun you'll be welcomed. People are very cool about doing ride-alongs and just car talk in general too, so it's a cool way to get to experience lots of fun cars being driven hard!

Where in Sonoma county are you? Now I get why you suggested wine country - I actually head to Sonoma a LOT more than Napa (mostly Healdsburg but there's a lot of fun stuff and driving roads along the Russian River too). Also...Skaggs!

Thats a little ways. But could be worth it. Just couldnt do it too often lol. Sounds like a ton of fun though. I'm in Santa Rosa. We do have some great roads! And some terrible ones LOL

It's your fellow competitors shagging cones. Not a big deal, they get hit all the time.

Videos always seem to make a course look really hard to follow. It's not that bad to get through most courses, you do have to keep your eyes up and look ahead. Look down and you're screwed. That's harder than it sounds.

I averaged 3 a run during my first heat my first time. Only hit one in the second heat though!

I'm trying again next Sunday. I put a 'cone killer' sticker on my car, many lulz will be had

It's not even remotely as hard as you'd think to figure the course out. Wherever you go should have instructors, and if not proper instructors at least experienced people that can ride with you the first few times. It helps immensely.

I hit a 3 cone average my first 5 runs. I did not understand where the right side of my car was. I was embarrassed but only with myself, no one made a big deal about it besides joking with me. Just don't take yourself too seriously the first time.

Here's some of my terrible runs, with the instructor's commentary:

I got the hang of it in the afternoon

My one tip that I don't normally see in the threads giving advice for the first time: show up early enough to help setup the course. It gives you a good chance to learn the course, but you also get to talk to experienced people and understand their reasoning behind setting up the course a certain way. I felt like that helped me immensely.
